Coursework: Summer Project 2024

 Research: music videos

Music video 1:

Title: Eminem- Not afraid

Narrative:

In terms of its narrative, the shots used to tell the story, and how it was edited together it strengthens the representation of the narrative shown to the audience Not Afraid begins with Eminem shown standing on a rooftop in Manhattan, who is then repeatedly shown rapping in a shanty-looking apartment. As the video progresses, Eminem is repeatedly shown as being indestructible, as he crosses a busy high street, without stopping for cars, and without trying, he manages to avoid the cars. Eminem is then located in a mirror maze, which makes him slightly confused at first, but then he breaks the glass, and returns to New York City, which is shown to be half destroyed, and Eminem then takes a suicide leap, but instead of dying, he gains the ability to fly, and then flies around the city, returning to the rooftop where the music video had begun. Throughout the music video, a key theme of standing up to face your demons is represented.

Music video 2:

Title: Tame Impala " Let It Happen"

Camerawork:

The music video begins with an establishing shot of the sky after sunset which could refer to the end of the day and can symbolise the end of your life. The dark clouds could signify bad events may occur to the character who walked across the shot foreshadowing his fate. Throughout the music video the colours weren't vibrant and alive but grey and brown which is dull and boring representing the mans life. After the plane crash as the beat builds up the lighting becomes more high key and the clouds colour show a light peach while this is happening the man is being tended to by paramedics seemingly grasping on for dear life trying to survive but ultimately doesn't. After we can see the clouds turn blue and open a way for him to go heaven as the lyrics say Let it happen basically saying he would rather go heaven and let go then live this mundane boring business man lifestyle.

Music video 3:

Title: Yellow

Mise En Scene:

Not much is shown in the music video Yellow but The band came up with the line, "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you" after looking up at the night sky.  It was a nice, clear sky, and Cold play's producer, Ken Nelson, said, "Look at the stars, lads." Martin proceeded to write "Yellow" in 10 minutes. Across the quiet beach he walked while singing the heartfelt song "Yellow" which instantly became a hit sensation and one of the most viewed YouTube videos of all time. He wore a nice thin jacket and normal jeans as he strode across the beach. No makeup was seen in the video

Music video 4:

Title: Ghost town

Editing

Directed by Barney Bubbles, the music video consists of two important structural elements: the band’s unnerving performance intercut with shots of the bleak urban landscape. The narrative seems to be straightforward. The Specials are dressed for the weekend, but they drive aimlessly through the streets of London looking for somewhere to go. However, the futility of their journey is confirmed by closing shot of the group throwing stones into the Thames. Constant cuts and montages of them in the car. Which is really unique

Music video 5:

Conventions:

Narrative takes a big focus in "Thriller". The song's narrative first becomes evident when we see Jackson and his love interest watching a movie about a man (portrayed by Jackson) and his girlfriend (portrayed by Jackson's love interest) who seemingly have a normal date, until he turns into a werewolf (see picture). This foreshadows what will occur in the song, as Jackson turns into a zombie over halfway through the song. For the same reason as a love interest, narrative is usually present in pop music videos to keep the audience's attention, in case they become bored by seeing the artist perform.

Music video 6:

Intertextuality:

Katy Perry- Last Friday Night

In 'Katy Perry- Last Friday Night' one of the intertextual references is that Rebecca Black is featured in the music video- who was previously known for recording her own song and video for her original 'Friday'. The audience would have been likely to recognise her straight away as at this time, her video was widely recognised. This was a way of paying homage to the artist.

Statement of intent: First draft got deleted this is the second draft

The music video I will be doing is titled "Fight fire with fire" . It is inspired by the famous indie group "Tame impala" . The title of the song that inspired my music video is " Let it happen" and the song will be used in the music video. In the music video the message that I want to convey is resilience triumphs over anxiety. The act of not giving up by pressing through the situation. Throughout the music video the themes I want to represent is confidence and resilience. The genre is "Indie" which focuses on mental health and the problems which surround it.

The so called band I have created is called "SOLIDER" it mixes with the theme of confidence and fighting through the problems just like real life soldiers do. My two locations will be consist of my some shots of me in my house and a long field of grass to set the tone as I traverse through the field. The other location is a park which will mostly consist of the concrete football field where most of the music video will be. The idea for these locations is to first traverse through the field of grass then arrive at the football field. I have decided to add a short clip of me in my bed waking up from a nightmare demonstrating my anxiety and stress.

The shots will consist of close up shots of my visible frustration and stress building in my face as the music builds up (Tame impala is famous for its build up of the song and the final beat that makes it a masterpiece). Other shots will be far away shots of the football field as I shoot the ball to fully demonstrate what I am doing which is kicking the ball and missing it followed by close up shots of my face as I get angrier and angrier. The indie genre mainly focuses on mental health and the effects it has on the average human so it is my objective to try and explain its depth and complexity. The lighting will be mostly low key as it demonstrates to the audience the bleak atmosphere that I create in the music video and how it will gradually get lifted as I understand the feeling of accepting and moving on. I will use Todorov's narrative theory. First the equilibrium then the disequilibrium and then the new equilibrium. Audience pleasures in order for my audience to enjoy it and I must start emphasising and identifying with characters or content represented in them and make it seem relatable rather than distant to grow that sense of connection and enjoyment.

My target audience will mostly be young people who struggle and are stressed in their life they have built up anxiety and stress over time. I will demonstrate that feeling through me shooting the ball and constantly missing which angers and frustrates me. The class will be low to middle working class as shown in the music video I go to public school, live in a normal house which is what will be shown.

My footwear brand "Clarks" which is a shop that mostly has working class customers which is the message I want to convey to my audience. I will showcase this music video on YouTube a platform that has the ability to reach audiences around the world.

The psychographics I hope to attract is Aspirers people who afraid to dream and panic about the past. Mainstreamers are nice for interactions with the video's views but it doesn't speak to them like the aspirers do. It is mostly what the indie genre is specialized in. They are very unique in the music industry which is what I like about them.
