Statement of Intent 3
Music Magazine
Title: Fate-less
Slogan: We do music right
Indie-focused magazine
My print coursework will encompass a front cover page of my star from the music video, a two-page 400+ word interview conversing about the production of my indie music, what my music signifies, and any future music projects coming up. A contents page labelled "What's inside". I will use a variety of locations to take photos for my music magazine to exhibit the indie music genre. For example, I intend to take a photo of myself doing an intimate live performance, or a photo behind street art or large graffiti, which is very stereotypical of the indie genre.
Music video:
Title: “The Silent Noise”
Genre: Indie
Inspiration: “Tame Impala”
Band: “Friction”
Song: “Let It Happen” by Tame Impala
My music video will predominantly showcase a young boy, Zorian, sleeping and having a sweat-ridden nightmare at an abandoned, gloomy park. We will go through the nightmare back into Zorian, shaking uncontrollably until he is awoken. He is, in all senses, the hero, using Propp's character types to go on this journey of self-discovery and individuality(Propp character types). On this journey, he will ascertain that he's running out of time and that he will soon die. The sudden disequilibrium moves into the narrative, abruptly disrupting the journey of self-discovery(Todorov's narrative theory). The video will end with a cliffhanger; there is no perceived ending, therefore, similar to postmodern texts, which resist narrative closure. (Postmodernism - Jean-Francois Lyotard)
Locations:
- London. Lime Tree Park at dusk. To demonstrate this gloomy and bizarre nightmare. It must be abandoned with no signs of life. London has an abundant population, which means acts such as graffiti aren't rare. The act of graffiti demonstrates rebellion and expressing oneself, which links well to the indie genre.
- The other location is a house. Specifically, the music video will start on the first floor of the house. It will showcase the bedroom where Zorian will have the nightmare and the bathroom, which will suddenly showcase the moment when Zorian will soon die.
Cinematography:
- For the shots, I will do a variety of close-ups of my face at the park, visibly showing my frustration. Long shots for the scene of Zorian moving across the park, gazing at this shadowy figure, seemingly foreshadowing Zorian's death.
- Varying close-ups of my sweat-ridden face. Along with the match-on-action of me moving from the bedroom to the bathroom.
- Some zoom shots on the bed. Zooming onto Zorian's exhausted face whilst he is having a nightmare
- Perhaps a tracking shot to transition from the bed to the entrance of the bedroom. As the music begins to elevate more and more
Sound:
.
Non-diegetic music - "Let it Happen". The track promotes a sense of mystery at the beginning. The music slowly builds up as Zorian discovers he is not alone in the nightmare, creating tension and suspense. When the track enters its final phase, Zorian is awoken, seemingly transitioning the music video to me awake on the bed.
Audience
My target audience will mostly be young people who struggle and are stressed in their lives; they have built up anxiety and stress over time. This is typically shown through adolescence, from ages 16 to 20. I will demonstrate that feeling through Zorian shooting the ball and constantly missing, which angers and frustrates him. The social class will be working to middle class (ABC1), as will be shown in the music video. Zorian goes to a state school and lives in a typical house, which is what will be shown. My footwear brand, "Vans," is a shoe that is mostly designed for working to middle-class customers, which is what most of my audience will be. Using Audience pleasures, I must start emphasising and identifying with characters or content represented in them( like the character in the music video "Zorian" ) and make it seem relatable rather than distant to grow that sense of connection and enjoyment. (Blumer and Katz- personal identity)
The psycho-graphics of my adolescent audience are "Explorers" and "Reformers". My audience will be overcome by the desire to discover/explore Zorian's identity through the music video and magazine interview. Rebelling against the idea of no change. (Phillip Kotler - Psycho-graphics)
Representation:
My music video will reflect the ongoing challenges of a teen struggling with his mental health and who he is, and, as a result of that, has constant nightmares. Specifically with a male audience. Using Stuart Hall and his representation theory, we can understand how certain groups are constructed and made to act a certain way. With male teenagers, the stress and anxiety are typically brushed aside as the media often perpetuates the idea that males are supposed to be emotionally strong, and any sign of weakness is incompatible with the ideal masculine figure (Stuart Hall's representation theory). As stated before in the audience section, my music video will be aimed at a younger generation, which means there are generational differences in the idea of masculinity. New masculinity is what I am choosing to explore in my music video. (David Gaunlett- masculinity).
